Phonics blending at St Lawrence High School and Junior College

At the phonics station at St Lawrence High School and Junior College, the teachers taught “R and L” blends to the Grade 1 students through an engaging and hands-on activity. The aim of the lesson was to help children identify and pronounce blend sounds correctly while enjoying the learning process.

The teachers explained that R blends and L blends are formed when two consonant sounds are spoken together without breaking the sound. To make this clear and interesting, small blend cards were used. Each card displayed a blend sound and the children were encouraged to read the sounds aloud.

Students picked the cards one by one and identified whether the sound was an R blend or an L blend. They practised saying the sounds clearly and tried to think of simple words using the blends. This activity helped improve their phonics awareness and listening skills. The children were very excited and actively participated in the lesson. They enjoyed using the small cards and learning sounds through play. The phonics station activity made the lesson lively, meaningful, and effective for the young learners
