An Ode to Odissi at St Lawrence High School and Junior College

As part of an initiative to celebrate India’s cultural richness, a special session on Odissi was organized at St. Lawrence High School and Junior College.

Teachers introduced students to the history and origin of Odissi, one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, which originated in the state of Odisha. They explained its distinctive features, such as fluid movements, sculptural poses, and expressive storytelling rooted in devotion and mythology.

To make learning more interactive, students were shown videos of traditional Odissi performances. The graceful movements, rhythmic patterns, and expressive gestures captivated the young audience and gave them a deeper understanding of the art form.

To make the experience even more memorable, teachers dressed in traditional Odissi costumes, complete with silver jewelry, neatly tied hair adorned with flowers, and classical makeup. Their appearance beautifully reflected the elegance and spiritual essence of Odissi, leaving students mesmerized.

The session successfully highlighted the richness and diversity of Indian classical dance, inspiring students to value and preserve India’s cultural heritage.
