The Lawrentian encounter with Onam and Baisakhi
“A festival is a showcase of the vibrant colors of culture.”
The Grade 1 students of St. Lawrence High School and Junior College learned about India’s rich culture through fun celebrations of Onam and Baisakhi.
For Onam, teachers dressed in traditional Kerala attire and showed a flashcard of the Onam Sadhya, the grand feast served on banana leaves. Using a map of India, they pointed out Kerala and explained the festival’s story in a simple way.
For Baisakhi, teachers wore colorful Punjabi costumes and shared a flashcard of a bonfire, an important part of the celebration. They also used the map to show Punjab, where Baisakhi is celebrated with joy and lots of dancing.
These activities made learning fun and helped students understand the diversity of Indian festivals through dress-up and visual experiences.
