Kindness and teamwork can make every difficult task easier.

At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, the Grade 2 students enthusiastically participated in an interactive kathalaya session station based on the story – ‘The cat and the rat’ which helped them to learn about community helpers in an easy manner. It also allowed them all to participate as the story has numerous characters who speak with expression and a unique vibe.

In the story, the rat’s tail is stolen by the cat and in order to get it back the rat is forced to do the work of the cat and then eventually many a community helper – like the postman, tailor, milkman, butcher, baker etc. – each a character of the story.

The story taught the children a lesson about how not to bully others – like the cat did – and how it is important to never give up – like the rat. It also taught them about how what we want isn’t always easily available in life and we need to give something in return to get something.

Kathalaya stories always inspire children and teach them about the real world through interesting characters and storylines. Every child was creatively satisfied due to the opportunity they got to portray so many characters and they all went home a little wiser and kinder.
