Vowel sounds of Marathi explored at St Lawrence High School and Junior College
“Marathi is not just a language to speak, it is our culture, our heritage.” – Anonymous
At St. Lawrence High School & Junior College the Grade 3 students were taught that Marathi is a rich and sweet language. In Marathi every vowel and consonant is closely connected to each other.
While learning vowels, students were introduced to barakhadi (vowel–consonant combinations) with the help of consonants. They also learnt that when we understand vowel signs properly, the beauty of the language becomes even more evident.
Students were taught that E (ए) and Ai (ऐ) are mid-range vowels, and it is important to use them correctly. The pronunciation of “ए” is short and simple whereas the pronunciation of “ऐ” is long and stretched. If these vowels and their signs are understood carefully, writing becomes accurate without any errors.
Pronunciation becomes clear, which makes communication more graceful. It also helps students in reading, writing, and reciting poems.
The motto behind this was to make the students aware about vowel rules in Marathi through which we can develop a true love for learning the Marathi language.
