Data sorting and Handling at St Lawrence High School and Junior College

At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, a creative and engaging approach was recently used to introduce the concept of data handling to the Grade 1 students. Understanding that young learners grasp ideas better through hands-on experiences, the teachers designed a fun, activity-based lesson using simple classroom materials like pencils, erasers, and chalks.

The session began with the teacher showing the students different objects like pencils, erasers, and coloured chalks and asking them to observe and identify each item. The children were then encouraged to sort these objects into groups based on type or colour. This simple classification activity helped them understand the basic idea of organizing data.

Next, the teacher guided the students to count how many items were in each group. For example, they counted how many pencils, how many erasers, and how many chalks were present. The teacher then drew a simple chart on the board and recorded the numbers. This visual representation made it easier for the children to see and compare quantities.

To make the lesson more interactive, each student was given a chance to place a mark or symbol on the board representing their chosen object. This helped them actively participate and reinforced their understanding of collecting and recording data.

The use of familiar materials made the lesson relatable and enjoyable. The children showed great enthusiasm throughout the activity and were eager to participate. By the end of the session, they were able to understand basic concepts of data handling such as sorting, counting, and simple representation.

This approach highlights the effectiveness of experiential learning, especially for young students. By turning a simple topic into a playful and engaging activity, the teacher ensured that learning was both meaningful and memorable.
