Exploring National Currency: Grade 2 Learns About the Indian Rupee

“The most important thing to remember is that our nation’s currency should be strong and stable.”

— Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, Grade 2 students recently embarked on an educational journey to discover the significance of India’s national currency.

The lesson began with an introduction to the National Emblem, helping students understand its presence on currency notes and coins. They learned that currency is essential for transactions, and in India, this is represented by the Indian Rupee (₹), a symbol designed by D. Udaya Kumar.

Students engaged with real currency, examining notes and coins while receiving detailed information about their features and denominations. They also explored currencies from various countries, including Japan, Australia, Europe, and the United States, gaining insights into how currencies differ globally. The lesson highlighted that Indian Rupees cannot be used outside India, reinforcing the concept of national currency.

The aim of this activity was to deepen students’ appreciation for the Indian Rupee and to help them understand its importance in the context of the global economy. By learning about currency, students developed essential knowledge that will serve them in their everyday lives.
