“Food is not rational. Food is culture, habit, craving, and identity.”
—Jonathan Safran Foer
At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, the Grade 2 students recently explored an engaging lesson on the different types of food we eat. This educational session introduced the children to two primary sources of food: food from plants and food from animals.
The students also learned about three essential categories of food: energy-giving food, body-building food, and protective food. They enthusiastically provided examples of each type, deepening their understanding of the importance of a balanced diet.
During the session, the children realized the significance of including all these categories in their meals to stay strong and healthy. To reinforce this learning, every Wednesday, students brought a complete meal to school, including a plate, bowl, and spoon, and shared their meals with friends. They proudly identified the types of food they brought, demonstrating their growing knowledge of nutrition.
The lesson also emphasized the importance of eating three well-balanced meals a day, ensuring the inclusion of all necessary food groups to support overall health and well-being. This hands-on approach allowed students to experience the joy of eating nutritious food while understanding the value of a balanced diet.
