Fun with Shapes: Learning by Doing
At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, we believe that children learn Mathematics best when they explore, create and experience concepts through hands-on activities. To make Geometry interesting and meaningful for our Grade 3 students, we conducted a Maths Lab activity titled “Fun with Shapes.”
In this activity, students were given square-shaped paper and encouraged to create different 2D shapes from it. They carefully cut out the shapes, pasted them on a sheet of paper and identified their vertices and edges. This hands-on experience helped them understand the properties of different shapes in a fun and interactive way.
Learning through activities allows children to connect mathematical concepts with practical experiences. By creating shapes on their own, students developed their creativity, observation skills and understanding of basic Geometry. They also learned to recognise the differences between shapes based on their sides and vertices.
Such activities make Mathematics more than just numbers and calculations. They encourage students to think, explore and learn independently while building confidence in their abilities.
Our goal is to make Mathematics enjoyable and meaningful by providing opportunities for children to learn through doing. Through “Fun with Shapes,” we aim to strengthen students’ geometrical understanding and inspire them to discover the beauty of Mathematics in everyday life.
