The Lawrentian encounter with Bharatnatyam and Odisi
At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, the Grade 1 students joyfully explored two classical dance forms of India – Bharatanatyam and Odissi. The session was conducted with the objective of introducing students to India’s rich cultural and artistic heritage, helping them appreciate classical dance and music, and understanding how dancers use movements, expressions and gestures to tell stories.
Teachers explained the key features of both dance forms with the help of colourful pictures, flashcards and maps. Students learned that Bharatanatyam is a famous classical dance form from Tamil Nadu, performed with bent knees and graceful hand gestures called mudras, colourful costumes and traditional jewellery. They also learned about Odissi, the graceful classical dance form from Odisha, and were introduced to Maharis and Gotipuas.
The session was interactive and engaging, with students actively participating by practising mudras, identifying musical instruments such as the sitar and tabla, and joyfully stamping their feet to the rhythm. Teachers also explained the importance of facial expressions in conveying stories without words, along with the traditional costumes and jewellery associated with these dances.
The activity provided students with an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience while developing an appreciation for Indian classical dance, music and traditions. It filled their little hearts with joy, curiosity and pride for our rich Indian culture.
