Excessive screen time is a danger facing us all in today’s day and age.

The Grade 1 students at St. Lawrence School learned more about enjoying simple games and activities that a screen can’t offer. For this, all the Grade 1 teachers performed a skit called ‘The Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV’ in front of the students. The skit featured a family of bears who loved watching TV. It was presented to all the students where they saw how mother bear decided not to watch TV for a week which broke the TV watching habit of the bear family.

The skit highlighted various topics related to what exactly they should do for entertainment and daily news if they don’t want to watch TV. All students were reminded that spending more time with their family and friends, going for a walk in nature – near or far or on the sand or under trees – taking photographs with a camera (not your phone) or sketching what you see in your journal, spending copious amount of time with the people you love, playing, talking, dreaming, cooking, laughing, reading etc. can be the various alternatives to watching TV.

The students really enjoyed the skit and learned that too much screen time can lead to obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back problems, depression, anxiety and low test scores in children. They imbibed this lesson better because it was presented in a fun skit enacted by their very favourite teachers.
