Fostering a Love for Stories at St. Lawrence: A Look at Gurumpa’s Kindergarten
At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, we believe that play is essential for learning, not a luxury. It is in this spirit that our Grade 2 students engaged with the enchanting story “Gurumpa’s Kindergarten” during their Kathalaya sessions.
Storytelling serves as a powerful educational tool, igniting a passion for books and enhancing vocabulary, reading skills, and concentration. Through “Gurumpa’s Kindergarten,” students learned valuable lessons about perseverance and creativity, discovering the importance of trying and never giving up.
In the first two weeks, students read the story and answered questions, demonstrating their ability to recall events in sequence and recognize the characters Gurumpa encounters. The third week introduced a fun twist—students rearranged jumbled story cards, taking turns to narrate the tale in order. This interactive activity not only reinforced their understanding but also fostered collaboration and communication.
By the fourth week, creativity took center stage as students illustrated one of Gurumpa’s creations and wrote sentences on how they would use it. This hands-on approach further deepened their connection to storytelling.
Through this engaging session, we have successfully nurtured our students’ interest in stories and introduced them to diverse storytelling techniques, laying a strong foundation for a lifelong love of reading.
