Safety First: Empowering Our Future

“The best protection is early preparation.”

At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, our Grade 1 students recently participated in an engaging safety activity designed to instill essential precautions for everyday life.

The day began with a hands-on exploration of home safety. Students created a mock home environment where they identified potential hazards, such as sharp objects, hot appliances, and electrical outlets. They learned the significance of organizing toys and materials in designated spaces, fostering awareness of their surroundings and the importance of safety at home.

Next, the focus shifted to road safety. Using a miniature road complete with signals and zebra crossings, students acted out real-life scenarios. They practiced the critical steps of looking left, right, and left again before crossing, understanding traffic signals, and recognizing the importance of zebra crossings. Additionally, they learned to hold an adult’s hand in busy areas and the necessity of parking in designated spaces.

The session also addressed stranger danger and playground safety. Through engaging discussions, students learned to follow age and weight limits on equipment, the importance of adult supervision, and how to share and take turns. They were encouraged to report any broken equipment to teachers or authorities, reinforcing a culture of safety.

This enlightening experience not only equipped our students with vital safety knowledge but also empowered them to take an active role in protecting themselves and others. By pledging to apply these principles in their daily lives, our young learners are becoming ambassadors of safety within their communities.
