Unlocking the Power of Storytelling at St. Lawrence High School and Junior College

At St. Lawrence High School and Junior College, we believe in the transformative power of storytelling. As Jimmy Neil Smith once said, “We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories.” This month, our Grade 3 and 4 students engaged in an enriching storytelling session featuring “How Grandmother’s Spider Stole the Sun.”

This captivating tale teaches an essential lesson: when humans hoard the sun for themselves, the animals are left in darkness. In a powerful act of unity, the animals reclaim a piece of the sun, placing it in the sky for all to share. This narrative not only highlights the interconnectedness of all beings but also emphasizes the vital contributions each one makes to our ecosystem.

After the story, students created beautiful finger puppets of spiders, engaging in a hands-on activity that reinforced the theme of weaving connections in nature. Through this exercise, they learned that, much like the threads of a web, we all have a role to play in the world around us.

Ultimately, this storytelling session instilled a profound message of unity and appreciation for our roles within nature. At St. Lawrence, we strive to cultivate not only confident readers but also empathetic storytellers who understand the value of every being’s contribution
